What is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned in a single semester. It is the standard way Indian universities โ€” VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and most others โ€” measure academic performance per semester.

Each subject carries a certain number of credits(usually 3โ€“4). Your SGPA is calculated by multiplying each subject's grade point by its credits, summing them all, and dividing by total credits.

SGPA Formula

SGPA = ฮฃ (Grade Point ร— Credits) รท ฮฃ Credits

Example:
  Subject A: Grade Point 9 ร— 4 Credits = 36
  Subject B: Grade Point 8 ร— 3 Credits = 24
  Subject C: Grade Point 7 ร— 4 Credits = 28

  Total Credit Points = 36 + 24 + 28 = 88
  Total Credits       = 4 + 3 + 4    = 11

  SGPA = 88 รท 11 = 8.0

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average across ALL semesters you have completed. It is calculated the same way as SGPA, but using every subject from every semester combined. CGPA is what appears on your final degree certificate and is what employers and universities look at first.

SGPA to CGPA Conversion Formula

The simplest method is the average of all semester SGPAs:

CGPA = (SGPAโ‚ + SGPAโ‚‚ + SGPAโ‚ƒ + ... + SGPAโ‚™) รท n

Example (4 semesters):
  Sem 1 SGPA = 7.8
  Sem 2 SGPA = 8.2
  Sem 3 SGPA = 8.5
  Sem 4 SGPA = 8.1

  CGPA = (7.8 + 8.2 + 8.5 + 8.1) รท 4 = 8.15

Note: For credit-weighted calculation (recommended), use the full formula across all subjects. Our free SGPA / CGPA Calculator โ†’ handles both methods automatically.

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

Different universities use different multipliers:

  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): Percentage = (CGPA โˆ’ 0.75) ร— 10
  • Anna University: Percentage = CGPA ร— 10
  • Mumbai University: Percentage = (CGPA ร— 7.25) + 11
  • Most other universities (generic): Percentage = CGPA ร— 9.5

Our SGPA calculator automatically selects the correct formula based on your university. Select VTU for Visvesvaraya Technological University results.

VTU Grading Scale (10-Point System)

  • O (Outstanding): 90โ€“100 marks โ†’ 10 Grade Points
  • A+ (Excellent): 80โ€“89 marks โ†’ 9 Grade Points
  • A (Very Good): 70โ€“79 marks โ†’ 8 Grade Points
  • B+ (Good): 60โ€“69 marks โ†’ 7 Grade Points
  • B (Average): 55โ€“59 marks โ†’ 6 Grade Points
  • C (Satisfactory): 50โ€“54 marks โ†’ 5 Grade Points
  • P (Pass): 40โ€“49 marks โ†’ 4 Grade Points
  • F (Fail): Below 40 marks โ†’ 0 Grade Points

What is a Good SGPA / CGPA?

  • 9.0 โ€“ 10.0: Exceptional โ€” top of class, scholarship eligible
  • 8.0 โ€“ 8.9: Excellent โ€” shortlisted for top campus placements
  • 7.0 โ€“ 7.9: Good โ€” eligible for most companies, competitive
  • 6.0 โ€“ 6.9: Average โ€” many companies require 6.0+ as minimum
  • Below 6.0: May face cutoff barriers in some placement drives

Does CGPA Matter for Jobs?

Yes โ€” but context matters. Most top IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture) require a minimum 6.0 CGPA. Product companies and startups may weigh projects and skills more heavily, but a strong CGPA still signals consistency and academic discipline.

For higher education (MTech, MS, MBA), most universities in India and abroad evaluate CGPA as a primary criterion. An 8.0+ CGPA significantly improves your chances.
